Ah! La Belle Epoque, the peak of luxury, art, and culture in French society. A period characterized by optimistic spirits, peace, innovation and general prosperity. Before the horrors of World War I, the era brought forth a golden age of sorts. All of these ideals trickled over to the United States, sparking movements of our own during the times of the robber barons like J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Andrew W. Mellon and John D. Rockefeller.

In the United States, women protested for the right to vote during the Edwardian era. Due to the efforts of great women like Alice Stone Blackwell, Susan B. Anthony and Carrie Chapman Catt, the 19th Amendment was made to the Declaration of Independence granting women the right they demanded.

In the Edwardian era, styles changed greatly to match the general spirit. Hoop skirts became nearly obsolete, as women opted for smooth skirts flared at the hemline. Suits were tailor-made, worn with a blouse. They were far more comfortable than the hoop skirt and ideal for traveling.

The Gibson Girl was the ideal image of beauty for the age. Drawn by Charles Dana Gibson in 1890, she set the standard for not only women's beauty but also their personality. She was not only slender and vivacious, but also sporty and charismatic. She was an equal to men, teasing them with her cheeky wit and cleverness. Due to the Gibson Girl, the S-curve shape became widely popular. The chest came forward as the tightly laced corset forced the hips back.

At Recollections we have a variety of ensembles, sure to please the Gibson Girl inside. Choose from batiste, cotton, silk, lace and even velvet fabrics. Sleeves range from elbow length, leg-o-mutton, to flounced. Complete your look with a hat so elegant, it's sure to make Rose from Titanic jealous.

All Recollections garments are available in sizes XS to XXXXL and are proudly designed and created in the United States of America. Our knowledgeable sales staff are here to assist you every step of the way. We look forward to making your next ensemble!
