Shop Capes, Shawls, Boas
During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, outwear was worn to stay warm and modest. Shoulders would be covered by lace shawls to keep respectable women modest at evening soirees. Likewise, velvet capes would be worn to keep the body warm while walking from the stagecoach or car to a luxurious gala at a friend's mansion. Capes and shawls were status symbols and worn during every season. They came in a variety of fabrics: lace, fur, velvet and satin.
Capes came in two variations: floor length or cropped. Cropped capes were often worn with full skirts, to allow for a wider range of movement. Collared cropped capes were in vogue towards the end of Queen Victoria's reign. The higher the collar, the better.
A cape could also be used to disguise pregnancy, the wide a loose shape was quite forgiving. Since pregnancy was considered a loss of freedom for many Victorian women. Pregnancy was often kept hidden and secret. Pregnant women were often confined during their last trimester of pregnancy, when they no longer could wear a corset.
