"A large portion of our time was spent changing our clothes."

During the Victorian era, women had many rules when it came to what they could and couldn't wear. The etiquette of Victorian dress was meticulous. One wouldn't be regarded as a distinguished lady if she didn't keep up with the rules of dress.

Depending on what she was doing throughout the day, a Victorian woman might have to change several times during the day to stay within these regulations. For instance, a Victorian woman would never dare wear her nightgown to breakfast. Instead she would wear a loose dress and blouse to appear neat and tidy in the morning.

Towards the end of the era, ready-made blouses could be purchased in a number of styles for a low price. Many women opted for the easy combination of blouse and skirt. It could be worn to work, out shopping and for other informal occasions. The ever-popular Girabaldi shirt was worn with a skirt and a belt around the waist. The separation of the bodice and skirt allowed for a closer fitting waist.
