Shop Civil War Ensembles
During the time of the American Civil War, 1861-1865, the ideal waist size was 15 inches! Women wore corsets and large hoop skirts to emphasizes their tiny waists. Sturdy materials like steel, whalebone and tree bark were used to stiffen the corsets. Throughout the Victorian age, a corset symbolized a women's virtue--a key indicator of her morality.
Skirt length was related to functionality, while skirt fullness was solely related to fashion. A hoop skirt diameter typically ranged from 50 to 70% of the wearer's height! These gowns used a lot of fabric to cover the large circumference of the hoop skirt. In fact, formal gowns could use up to 25 yards of fabric.
