Step back in time
Mackinac Island lies where the crystal blue waters of Lakes Michigan and Huron mingle. It is a land of enchantment and a time capsule of a bygone era. Horse-drawn carriages replace automobiles and time slows to the pace of a gentler period. It is no surprise that this gem was chosen as the location of the 1980 Jane Seymour / Christopher Reeve romantic fantasy movie “Somewhere in Time.” It is also no surprise that nearly 35 years after the movie was released, the annual Somewhere in Time Weekend at the Grand Hotel, crown jewel of Mackinac Island, going strong and growing.
This year’s event took place October 17 – 19. Recollections was fortunate to have one of our models, Lisa, attend with her husband, Nate, and friend, Jan. We asked Lisa to share some of her memories and photos of the weekend with us.
This was the first time that Lisa, Nate, and Jan attended the event and they weren’t disappointed. People from as close as Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula and as far away as London and Australia mingled and openly shared information about events and their experience. One group was celebrating a “women’s” family reunion where sisters, aunts, and cousins could play dress-up and be transported back “Somewhere in Time” to the grace and elegance of the late Victorian / Edwardian Era.
Everyone who donned the beautiful historic garments conveyed that they felt right at home on the expansive porch of the Grand Hotel as well as when they sauntered down lanes shaded by hues of autumn and warmed by a glorious Indian Summer sun. For Lisa and Nate, the weekend was topped off in just the right way when he proposed to her “again” on the porch of the Grand Hotel. It was an unforgettable weekend for sure!
Lisa and Jan mingled with many of the participants, handing out business cards to those interested in learning more about Recollections and the beautiful history-inspired garments and accessories designed and constructed less than 70 miles south of Mackinac Island. One Recollections customer in attendance recognized the quality design and construction and asked Lisa and Jan if the garments came from us. Wow! That is quite the compliment. The customer related how much she loved her Recollections collection. To that, we say a heartfelt “thank you!”
