Genevieve smiled enigmatically across the table at her mother in law. Her full sleeves had successfully hidden the terribly dry turkey she had slipped off her plate and deposited under the table for the waiting pug dog.

The sea breeze brushed the maiden’s hair across her porcelain skin, the golden strands clung to the salt ridden streaks that threatened her usually flawless complexion. A starting, almost sardonic laugh broke free from her throat. Her darling Jonathan hadn’t even grown cold and here she was worrying about the redness of her eyes. Her one love, her best life. She choked back a sob as the memories came flooding back. Of the news, of…. of the body. God, the body. Where once used to be a vessel of light and wit and everything good was now nothing more than a mangled icy corpse. Almost as if Mother Earth were grieving the loss of a beautiful soul, the distraught waves of the ocean churned black with grief. A shaky smile adorned her swollen lips as the cold ocean foam lapped at the hem of her dress. No matter, she would see her beloved soon enough. It was only a matter of time.

The chickens had fled the coop at the very sight of her large basket. I just want eggs, I wasn’t going to cook you Charlotte can muttered as the tail if the last hen disappeared over the hill. She sat down to rest and delicately patted her brow. Jason must not know what a greenhorn she was at farming. She must bring some eggs back! Then she spotted a roadside stand and happily bought a dozen eggs from a girl trending it. She smiled and walked back towards the house.

Splayed in the summer heat, no longer keeping her lady like posture, she felt free. Well, as free as she could get without removing the stifling cotton and itchy lace that bound her limbs and constricted her every move. The green rolling hills of the plains sent a slight breeze her way, relieving her for only a moment before skirting back beyond the horizon to leave her uninterrupted conference with the sun. The only moisture left seeming to be the droplets of sweat glimmering like graceless jewels upon her skin.

Cecily’s eyes were wide with excitement, her hands a’ quiver with the aftermath of the daring act she had just performed. As her now shoeless toes soaked into the sand she let out a shout of glee, throwing her hands to the sky. She refused to let anyone be the master of her fate. Her mother thought she had merely been being catty when Cecily had proposed the silly notion of running from her own arranged marriage. An ecstatic giggle emitted from her lips as she pictured her stern mother’s face now. As her eyes roamed the cloudy horizon and the frigid waves ruined her lace, she felt the endless possibility that the world could offer her. Cecily wouldn’t be tied down now, she couldn’t. She was ultimately, totally, positively free.

As the barely audible burp sliced through the stuffy atmosphere of the parlor, she couldn’t help but to make eye contact with her step mother. The slight tug of her lips and the familiar brow arch that she had practiced specifically for times such as these graced her face. Oh how she loved to tease the old bat. She let her young eye trail from their guest and back to her step mother once again, daring her to break character. The older woman across from the youth settled on a quiet sniff in a valiant effort to retain her composure. She decided to keep testing her step mother. You know, see if all those “poise and perfection” classes were worth a dime. Tonight would be such fun…

Violette stared at the profile before her, she had little room for error, as investigative business was rather serious. She’d fought hard for her position, receiving an occupation in a man’s world was no small feat. With every confidence in the wording of her inquiry, she dialed the super intendant’s number. The information she’d managed to slyly acquire could greatly affect the outcome of the case.

1. Sabina on the beach
Sabina’s late husband had planned
To be buried at sea, not on land;
And oh, how she cried —
Not for he who had died —
But for petticoats crusted with sand.
2. At the holiday dinner
Millicent smiled and said grace
As her husband sat stuffing his face;
He didn’t perceive
That she’d had up her sleeve
Powdered arsenic with her old lace.
3. Contemplating the lighthouse
A widow was known to have said
When again she was seeking to wed:
“Judge not a man’s rank,
Or his wealth in the bank,
But the size of his lighthouse instead.”
4. Long day on the farm
Young Cecily’s temper did fray
As she sent her ex-suitor away;
She’d worn her best frock
Just to find, to her shock,
All he sought was a roll in the hay.
5. In the lawyer’s office
Young legal assistants, it seems
Aren’t barred from the life of their dreams;
Though their wages are lacking,
