“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” And so begins this very romantic poem penned by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, one of the Victorian era’s foremost poets. What a great love she and Robert Browning shared. This poem was written early on in their relationship; during courtship and early marriage. History.com relates that she speaks of their dramatic romance and “how he helped her save herself from a life of sickness and isolation.” (Robert & Elizabeth Barrett Browning) The poets wed in secret, causing her to be disinherited by her father once he discovered they were married. The couple spent 15 years living, loving, and working in Italy before she died in his arms. It doesn’t get much more romantic than that!
