Women in Europe and American began wearing shirts in 1860, shortly after the introduction of separates in 1850. The Garibaldi shirt, named after the Italian Revolutionary hero, became popular fashion among Victorian women in the 1860s. Not only did it provide comfort, but it also became known as a "revolution in ladies' costume". The blouses were made in the same way as men's shirts of the time, with front pleats and buttons. Bishop sleeves were added to the shirt, for a feminine touch. The blouses were appropriate for morning, breakfast and demi-toilette or leisure wear.

As sportswear rose in popularity in the late 1880s, more and more women adopted the suit for everyday wear. The suit consisted of a jacket, skirt and blouse. The jacket had large padded shoulders and strong tailored features, giving women better posture and new found confidence. These broad shoulders corresponded with women's new roles in society. No longer were they confined to the cult of domesticity, but free to participate in work and sports just like their male peers.
