At Peter’s party, Christmas Eve,
Adelaide Taylor announced her leave.
“My dear friends,” she said, regretfully,
“My father is ill, so consequently,
I must move to London town,
To take care while he is down.
I leave on the morrow, and shan’t be back soon-”
It was at this point young Peter nearly swooned.
“I’m sorry to go, but I feel that I must.
You all will miss me, I do trust?”
She said with a smile, but everyone cried
Hats were doffed, as if she had died.
Everyone was quite distressed;
Especially Peter, who liked her best.
Her sanguine physiognomy not reflected
By the soiree she’d affected.
Their cries as euphony to her,
Unaware of her coming censure.
With cheerful mien she said palliatively,
“Oh, I’ve behaved egregiously!
I didn’t mean to be so pernicious!
That whole fable was fictitious!
I’ll be here tomorrow to celebrate Yule,
As will my father – ah, I’m cruel!”
Their irritation unequivocal and unfeigned,
Adelaide Taylor was nearly pained.
Well aware of their expostulation,
She was deserving, yet unshaken.
A certain felicity derived
By the pain she’d seen in dear Peter’s eyes.
